NEWS ON CLUB MEMBERS AND EVENTS

OFFICIAL OPENING OF THE RENOVATED CHARLES R. BELL ROOM

On Sunday July 18, 2010 the Bell family were invited to a small reception to re-open the renovated Charles R. Bell Room. It provided an opportunity for the RNYC to officially thank the Bell's  for their assistance and generous donation that permitted this renovation to take place. The ribbon was officially cut by Charles Bell lll. All who have seen the room are impressed with the transition that has taken place and we thank the Bell's for their support. Members are encouraged to view and use the room and their will be an official opening for members in the near future. Should you wish to book the room for a conference, meeting, shower or party, please talk to Jim in the office.

Unfortunately I do not have any photos of the Bell room prior to renovations but I am sure all who saw and knew it would agree, it was not an attractive room. Here are some photos during renovation and the finished Charles R. Bell Room. More photos and photos of the reception for the Bell's will be posted later this week in the Photo Gallery.

INSTALLATION OF AN AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATOR

Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are becoming more readily available in public places to increase the chances of saving the life of a person who has suffered a cardiac arrest. We now have an AED at the Club.

An AED is:

·                An electronic device that is able to identify cardiac rhythms and deliver a shock to correct abnormal electrical activity in the heart;

·                It will only advise that a shock be delivered if the heart is in a rhythm which can be corrected by defibrillation;

·                The training required is relatively brief and is usually delivered in conjunction with a CPR course;

·                The closer the AED and a trained responder are to a victim the greater chance of survival.

Our AED is located in an ‘alarmed’ cabinet on the lower floor in the corridor adjacent to the washrooms. While this area is locked after hours members can acquire a key to the outer door ensuring access to this vital piece of life saving equipment 24 hours a day. If you have yet to obtain your key please contact the Office.

As soon as the door of the AED cabinet is opened it will alarm both on the lower level and in the dining room area. If you hear the alarm we encourage you to investigate immediately. Chances are that someone is accessing the AED to respond to an emergency and they could use your assistance.

Technology has advanced so much that AEDs have become very user friendly. Once turned on it will talk you through the steps required. It is intended to be used in conjunction with CPR so we encourage people to become familiar with how to administer CPR. We are currently arranging for some of the staff to be trained and we will be also organizing training sessions for interested members in the near future. The more people we have trained the increased likely of success. We are very fortunate to have the Coast Guard on site. They are trained in CPR and in using AEDs.

·                Research estimates that the first three minutes are the most important when helping someone who has a cardiac arrest;

·                For every minute delay in defibrillation, the survival rate of a cardiac arrest victim decreases by 7 to 10%;

·                After more than 12 minutes of ventricular fibrillation the survival rate in adults is less than 5%;

·                Use of an AED can increase survival by 75% over CPR alone.

 If you have any questions please contact Jim at the Office or George Tilley.
