Instructors & Assistant Instructors

The Royal Newfoundland Yacht Club is accepting applications for Sailing School Instructors and Assistant Sailing Instructors for the 2016 season. The RNYC Sailing School runs both a Sail Canada CANSail Junior Sailing Program, an Adult Learn-to-Sail Program, training sessions and regattas. The RNYC is located on Long Pond Manuals, CBS, just minutes from St. John’s.

The school is looking to hire Instructors & Assistant Instructors to run the following CANSail Programs:

1. Wetfeet
2. CANSail 1&2
3. CANSail 3&4
4. CANSail 5&6
5. Adult Learn-to-Sail Program

The ideal candidate(s) will have the following qualifications, experience & skills:
• One or more of the following CANSail Instructor Certifications for Wetfeet, CANSail 1&2, 3&4, 5&6 (instructor registration and dues must be current and paid to Sail Canada by 01 June 2016)
• Experience instructing CANSail programs to children and teens
• Experience operating a coach boat (rubber dinghy with outboard motor)
• Experience sailing and coaching developmental classes dinghies; Opti, Radial, Laser, C420 and 29er is an asset
• Coach Boat Rescue Course Certificate (Sail Canada)
• Pleasure Craft Operators Certificate (Transport Canada)
• Marine Radio Certification (Canadian Power and Sail Squadron)
• Standard First Aid Certificate – 2 day course (St. John Ambulance, Canadian Red Cross or equivalent)

Duties and responsibilities include:
• Instructing kids and teens sailing lessons following the CANSail program curriculum
• Reporting weekly on each sailor’s progression through the CANSail curriculum
• Coming up with imaginative ways to teach various sailing skills
• Keeping safety of students the priority. Includes but not limited to the ongoing inspection of equipment and reporting deficiencies to the Head Coach following school reporting procedures.
• Keeping the sailing clubhouse and grounds tidy, clean and secure
• Assisting in the maintenance of the school’s dinghy fleet
• Assisting in the set up and take down of the school during shoulder seasons
• Participation in school events such as school regattas, lunch BBQ, awards event.
• Contribute to marketing, if requested
• Ensuring the delivery of a fun and quality sailing and learning experience for all participants
• Conducting yourself in an energetic, professional and positive manner
• Other related duties as required

Adult Sailing Instructors

Adult Learn-to-Sail Instructor – Sailing School
2016 Season

The Royal Newfoundland Yacht Club is accepting applications for an Adult Learn-to-Sail Instructors for the 2016 season.  This introduction to keel boat sailing has sessions during weekday evenings and on weekends.  Instructors are not required to hold specific sail coaching certifications.  See below for details.

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications and skills:
• Extensive experience sailing keel boats
• Ability to single handle a 28 foot keel boat –sailing and docking
• Experience teaching or presenting to adults
• Pleasure Craft Operators Certificate (Transport Canada)
• Marine Radio Certification (Canadian Power and Sail Squadron)
• Standard First Aid Course – (St. John Ambulance or Canadian Red Cross or equivalent – 2 day course)
• Ability to work on various weekday evenings and some weekends
• CANSail Instructor certificate an asset but no required

Duties include:
• Teaching a maximum of 4 adults to sail a keel boat
• Assist in responding to program inquiries from emails, phone, voicemail and Facebook, if needed
• Act as ambassador of the sailing school by providing excellent customer service
• Responsible for training materials and lesson plans for both classroom and on the water training. (Previous materials and reference books available).
• Delivery of a quality 12-hour program (over a few weekday nights and/or weekends).
• Assist in the marketing of the program, if required
• Ensuring safety of students and equipment is first priority at all times (includes ongoing inspections and maintenance as required – reporting deficiencies to Head Coach)
• Ensuring the school keel boat is kept clean and conducting regular inspections and alert Program Manager of any required maintenance
• Ensuring the delivery of a fun, quality sailing and learning experience for all participants
• Conducting yourself in an energetic, professional and positive manner
• Other duties as required

NOTE: If you are a trained CANSail instructor there may also be an opportunity to work with the junior sailing program during the days and/or the evening training sessions.

Business Manager

Business Manager / Instructor – Sailing School

The Royal Newfoundland Yacht Club is accepting applications for the position of Sailing School Business Manager/Instructor for the 2016 season. RNYC Sailing School runs a Sail Canada CanSail Junior Sailing Program, an Adult Learn-to-Sail Program, training sessions and regattas. The RNYC is located on Long Pond, Manuels in CBS, just minutes from St. John’s.

This position reports to the Head Coach and is a combination of office business manager and sailing instructor. The business manager portion of this position is responsible for all business operations of the school. In the absence of the Head Coach this position is the acting supervisor for the sailing school.

Business Manager responsibilities and required skills include:
• Handling all registrations for sailing school programs, training sessions and regattas
• Answering the school phone, voicemail, Facebook requests and emails
• Corresponding with parents and providing customer service on all school matters
• Updating the school Facebook page with notices about upcoming events
• Ensuring staff work hours are recorded daily and payroll reports are delivered to the RNYC
• Following budgetary guidelines for required purchases
• Organizing the weekly lunch BBQ
• Ensuring that the building and grounds are kept clean, tidy and secure
• Assisting in the development and execution of a marketing plan as needed
• Leading the organization and execution of the end of year awards event
• Coordinating the pre-season set up and post season take down of the sailing school
• Assisting the Head Coach in the coordination of regatta and training session logistics
• Ability to use Excel, Word and social media applications
• Conducting yourself in an energetic and positive manner
• Strong interpersonal, organizational and time management skills
• Experience managing staff an asset
• Other related duties as required
