Competent Crew Theory Online Classes: 4 Thursdays in a row starting May 4th from 19:00 to 22:00 (7:00 PM to 10:00 PM)

Day Skipper Theory Online Classes: 3 Tuesdays in a row starting May 4th from 19:00 to 22:00 (7:00 PM to 10:00 PM)

Please note, if you intend to take the theory, you will require the corresponding textbook in order to be certified. They serve as great reference material regardless of the course. We offer them at a discounted rate through the RNYC office, or you can order directly from the ISPA website.

The RNYC Learn To Sail Adult Keelboat Program offers 6 Levels of ISPA Certification available for ages 14 and up. The program consists of 6 courses of ISPA-certified classroom and onboard instruction. Hours for study and instruction are indicated for each course. Courses typically run from early in the new year for classroom/online sessions with onboard instruction running from April to October.


1. Competent Crew - ( ISPA Competent Crew Sail )

ISPA Certificate of Competence Crew SAIL (CC)

When registered with ISPA, the holder is certified as Skipper, competent to sail a vessel under 40 ft./12 metres, up to 30 GT where no navigational hazards exist, within inland waters, or safe harbour, during daylight hours, in light to moderate wind conditions and is also competent to crew aboard a sailing vessel in tidal waters as Competent Crew with a Skipper onboard.

2. Day Skipper - ( ISPA Day Skipper Sail )

ISPA Day Skipper Bareboat Certificate of Competence SAIL (DS)

When registered with ISPA, the Day Skipper Bareboat Certificate of Competence Sail certifies a Bareboat Skipper Sail responsible for the safety of his/her vessel and crew, for pleasure boats or Sail charter boats up to 30 GT, up to 45 ft./14 metres while day sailing in familiar waters, within 12NM (nautical miles) of safe harbour, during daylight, in moderate wind and sea conditions using basic navigational skill.

3. Coastal Navigation - ( ISPA Coastal Navigation )

ISPA Coastal Navigator Certificate of Competence (CN) Sail and Power

When registered, the holder is certified competent to navigate a 40 GT sailboat or powerboat up to a 50 ft./15 metres in coastal/tidal waters, without restriction on the area of navigation by day, using charts, a hand bearing compass, GPS, and navigational aids.

4. Advanced Coastal Skipper - ( ISPA Coastal Skipper Advanced Sail )

ISPA Coastal Skipper Bareboat Certificate of Competence SAIL (CSAS)

When registered, the holder is certified as Advanced Bareboat Coastal Skipper and navigator responsible for the safety of his/her sailing vessel and crew, for coastal passages. Competent to operate: boats used for private purposes, bareboat chartered boats, up to 100 GT, without restriction on the area of navigation, under the condition of holding an appropriate, First Aid, CPR, VHF or GMDSS Radio Certificate, and ISPA Coastal Navigator Certificate of Competence.

5. Offshore Yachtmaster - ( ISPA Yachtmaster Offshore )

ISPA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence SAIL (YM)

When registered, the holder is certified as skipper and navigator. Competent to operate: boats used for private purposes, bareboat chartered boats, yachts used for private purposes up to 100GT, without restriction on the area of navigation, under the condition of holding an appropriate national or foreign radio license if there is a radio-telephone VHF station or a GMDSS-VHF station on the boat or yacht and within 150 miles of the coastline, where navigational and weather hazards exist, in any conditions, at any time day or night.

6. Ocean Yachtmaster (YMO) - ( ISPA Yachtmaster Ocean Certificate of Competence SAIL (YMO) )

ISPA Yachtmaster Ocean Certificate of Competence SAIL (YMO)

Competent to operate: boats used for private purposes, bareboat chartered boats, yachts used for private purposes up to 200 GT, bareboat chartered yachts up to 200 GT, without restriction on the area of navigation, under the condition of holding an appropriate national or foreign radio licence if there is a radio-telephone VHF station or a GMDSS-VHF station on the boat or yacht where navigational and weather hazards exist, in any conditions, at any time day or night.

sailing apparel What to Bring - Sailing Equipment & Apparel

Maritime weather varies quickly and temperatures are often significantly cooler than onshore. For comfort and safety and to avoid delays particpants are required to dress and equip themselves appropriately including the following items:

You MUST have:

  • Government approved PFD (Personal Floatation Device)
  • Skid-proof deck shoes, white sole tennis shoes, or sailing boots.*
  • Waterproof/windproof jacket and long pants
  • Fleece underlayer
  • Hat that won’t blow off

*No sandals, flip-flops, open-toed shoes, or black soles.

We strongly recommend:

  • Water (1 litre at least)
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen
  • Food
  • Sailing gloves

* Some items available for sale at the Clubhouse.
